Review: Telekinesis - 12 Desperate Straight Lines

Telekinesis is the musical project of Seattle-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Lerner. On his second album, 12 Desperate Straight Lines, he delivers a catchy and energetic collection of power-pop songs that showcase his knack for melody and hooks.

The album was recorded in two weeks with producer Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) in Portland, Oregon. Lerner played most of the instruments himself, except for some guitar parts by Walla and some guest vocals by Rebecca Cole (The Minders, Wild Flag). The result is a crisp and polished sound that suits the upbeat and infectious nature of the songs.

The album opens with "You Turn Clear in the Sun", a bright and bouncy tune that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Lerner sings about a long-distance relationship with a girl who lives in another city, and how he misses her when she's away. The chorus is catchy and simple, with Lerner repeating "I love you" over a driving beat and fuzzy guitars.

The next track, "Please Ask for Help", is one of the highlights of the album. It's a fast and furious rocker that showcases Lerner's vocal range and intensity. He sings about feeling overwhelmed and isolated, and how he needs someone to reach out to him. The song has a catchy riff and a soaring chorus that will stick in your head for days.

The album continues with more catchy and energetic songs, such as "50 Ways", "I Cannot Love You", "Dirty Thing", and "Car Crash"
